Call it Rachael’s Last Stand.
Monday afternoon at Grovetown Middle School, four-time Columbia County Spelling Bee champion Rachael Cundey will take on 25 competitors in an attempt to return to the regional spelling bee an unprecedented fifth time.
An eighth-grader at Lakeside Middle School, Rachael is in her final year of the competition, which is limited to third through eighth grades.
In addition to winning Columbia County’s bee four times, Rachael also has gone on to win the regional bee the past three years. No other local speller has as many wins.
Joining Rachael this year at the county competition are champion spellers from each public elementary and middle school in Columbia County. All 26 will square off at 4 p.m. Monday, Jan. 28, at Grovetown Middle School.
Monday’s winner will compete in the regional bee, set for 10 a.m. March 2 at The Augusta Chronicle’s Morris Auditorium. The regional winner will receive an expense-paid trip to compete in the Scripps National Spelling Bee May 26-June 1 in Washington, D.C.
