Veterans are invited to explore job opportunities Tuesday at the Hiring Our Heroes job fair.
The event, organized by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, is aimed at military veterans and spouses, said Ernie Lombardi, Southeast Regional Associate of the national chamber.
The job fair will be from 9 a.m. to noon at Savannah Rapids Pavilion, 3300 Evans-to-Locks Road in Martinez.
The event is part of the national chamber’s Hiring 500,000 Heroes campaign, designed to get the business community to hire veterans.
“We’re offering quite a gamut of opportunities,” said Lombardi, adding that more than 300 veterans have registered for the event.
More than 40 companies are expected at the job fair, including CSX Corp., CVS, the Columbia County Board of Education, Edward Jones, Comcast, Lockheed Martin, Savannah River Remediation, Transamerica and The Augusta Chronicle.
The fair also includes organizations providing services for veterans such as the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and the state Department of Labor.
Veterans sometimes struggle with the transition from military to civilian careers. A problem, Lombardi said, is translating skills learned in the military to ones applicable in the civilian workforce.
“(We help) them verbalize the skills they learned in the (military) and how we can translate that into civilian language,” Lombardi said.
The event is a partnership between the national chamber, the Columbia County Chamber of Commerce, Columbia County, WAGT NBC 26, the Governor’s Office of Workforce Development, the Department of Veterans Affairs, the American Legion, the Department of Labor Veterans’ Employment and Training Service, the Georgia Committee of the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve and other local partners.
Job seekers can register at www.hoh.greatjob.net, but walk-ins are welcome.
