Symphony's Columbia County Music Series begins Saturday

Posted: January 9, 2013 - 1:01am

Symphony Orchestra Augusta is set to open its eighth annual Columbia County Music Series this weekend by bringing a french horn quartet to Evans.

The Four Hornsmen of the Apocalypse will perform at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 12, at the Jabez Sanford Hardin Performing Arts Center at the Columbia County Library.

The group, formed in 1997 as a student quartet at the University of Southern Mississippi, has played concerts in several colleges and public schools throughout the United States in addition to performing as soloists with orchestras.

A week after the musicians play in the county, they’ll perform with the Augusta Symphony on Jan. 19.

“They’re going to be busy,” said Amy Montgomery, the symphony’s director of education and community engagement.

Montgomery said The Four Hornsmen put on a varied program.

Playing classical Bach, Mozart and Strauss pieces, the horn ensemble also will give the audience a taste of light-hearted selections from composers such as Bach, Herman Jeurissen and Lowell Shaw.

As part of the series, The Four Hornsmen will go into area schools to put on an educational program for pupils.

“I think what’s unique to this particular series is that it’s really a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for these students,” Montgomery said. “It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for us, let alone the students.”

Stevens Creek, Blue Ridge and Lewiston Elementary schools were selected in the county this year for the performances. The SOA concert series will continue on Feb. 19 with the Perlman, Quint, Bailey Trio, and on March 9 with the Harlem Quartet.

Montgomery said each performing group offers a unique, varied sound.
“If you’ve never been to the symphony before, it’s a fantastic introduction,” she said. “There’s a better chance of you having a one-on-one experience with the musician in a smaller crowd.”

Tickets are available online at www.augustasymphony.org or an hour before each concert at the performing arts center. Admission costs $20 for the public and $7 for students and military personnel with identification. Concessions can be purchased at Footnotes Cafe inside the Columbia County Library.
