For the third year in a row, Musical Theatre Workshops will bring a Disney production to a local stage.

This year’s performance will be the stage adaptation of The Little Mermaid. Performances are at 2 and 7 p.m. Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday at Greenbrier High School’s auditorium. Aladdin and Mulan have also been produced by Musical Theatre Workshops.

This year’s production was chosen based on entertainment value, said Mickey Lubeck, director of Musical Theatre Workshops.

“Looking at the newest musicals available for production by a youth theatre group, I decided that The Little Mermaid would be entertaining for both children and adults,” she said. “The musical has beautiful music, catchy songs, a love story and hysterical characters.”

With a cast of 72 youngsters ranging from 5-years-old to high school, the production enables all the group’s young actors to have time in the spotlight.

“Our teen ensemble takes the principal roles, including Savannah Duncan as Ariel, Michael Rich as Sebastian, Nikki Dionissio as Flounder, Lauren Luce as Scuttle, Tyler Scarbury as Prince Eric, Rachel Young as the evil sea witch Ursula and Dalton Harnage as King Triton,” said Lubeck.

“Also featured are Triton’s daughters, two slippery eels, as well as a flock of crazy seagulls, elegant lagoon creatures and dozens of wacky sea creatures.”

Lubeck, along with her husband, performed in a national tour of Cats and wanted to bring her musical theater experience to young actors in the Augusta area. That led to opening Musical Theatre Workshops.

“Our musical theatre program teaches young actors how to work together as an ensemble to create an entirely new world on stage – to express themselves in a way that entertains the audience but at the same time teaches self-confidence and motivates them to do their best,” Lubeck said.

“We are producing the next generation of theatre triple threats – acting, voice and dance,” she said.

Tickets for The Little Mermaid cost $10 for adults and $8 for 18 and under.

Musical Theatre Work-shops offers classes in musical theatre production, acting technique, group and private voice lessons, musical theatre vocal coaching and non-competitive dance for ages 5 through adult.
