Columbia County’s annual tribute to the Red White and Blue is trying something new.
The Columbia County Red White and Blue celebration, established in 2001 as a way to honor local veterans and service members, traditionally has been held Memorial Day weekend. This year it was scaled down and moved to Veterans Day.
“The spring is just very crowded,” said county Community and Leisure Services Recreation and Events Manager Stacie Adkins. “We felt like it would do better on Veterans Day.”
Previous incarnations of the event have included ROTC demonstrations and speakers. She said those elements have been removed. Instead, by popular demand, the U.S. Army Signal Corps Band will perform.
“What we heard is that people would prefer a nice, relaxed concert,” she said. “So that’s what we are doing.”
The concert precedes a 10-12 minute fireworks display at dusk.
Although the date and format for the Red White and Blue Celebration have changed, the focus has not.
“This is still all about showing our appreciation, as a community, for our veterans,” Adkins said.
