The following accounts were taken from reports from The Columbia County Sheriff’s Office.
Man charged with drugs and shoplifting
A South Carolina man was charged with felony shoplifting and marijuana possession Friday after he was caught stealing from the Evans Walmart.
A Walmart loss prevention officer saw Phillip Leonard Legette, 49, put a 46-inch Samsung flat screen TV, HP desktop computer and an RCA iPad stereo dock into his shopping cart at about 8:45 a.m.
Legette left Walmart with the merchandise but soon came back inside the store, where he started loading another flat screen TV into a cart. Legette left the cart by the cash register and walked back outside.
A deputy who was called over to assist arrested Legette, who was in his Ford Explorer. The deputy found a bag with marijuana and two glass pipes in the console. The value of the stolen merchandise was $1,547.
Legette is being held at the Columbia County Detention Center with his bond set at $7,800.
Five cited for
Five Evans teens were issued minor in possession citations early Saturday while parked across from Greenbrier Elementary School.
A deputy thought the vehicle looked suspicious parked near the school at about 1 a.m. and smelled alcohol coming from inside as he talked to the occupants.
At first, the three 15-year-olds and two 16-year-olds denied that they had been drinking.
The front passenger, when asked, pointed to an opened 30-pack of beer in the floorboard. The boy admitted the beer belonged to him and the driver.
The teens, who all registered under the legal limit, admitted to drinking earlier in the night. They were released to their parents.
Arson reported at motel
An employee of the Quality Inn on Jimmie Dyess Parkway called authorities Sunday to report an arson in one of the motel’s rooms.
The man said between 10:15 a.m. Saturday and 11:35 a.m. Sunday occupants of a second floor room had set it on fire.
The fire was extinguished but had damaged the bed, floor and bathroom.
Martinez-Columbia Fire Rescue also was called to investigate.
TV, computer stolen from church
A flat screen TV and Apple computer were among the items reported stolen Sunday from a Martinez church.
A pastor of Stevens Creek Community Church, 600 Stevens Creek Road, called deputies and told them that someone took the TV, desktop computer, keyboard and mouse from a downstairs room.
The pastor said he had locked the building at noon on Saturday. The theft was discovered at about 6 p.m. Sunday.
He said a report had been filed the week before when several items were found missing from the church on Aug. 22. He believes the person stealing the items knows the church’s passcode.
