Posted: August 1, 2012 - 12:03am

The Columbia County Democratic Party wants to help students get ready to head back to school.

The party is holding the Back-to-School Jam from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Liberty Park Community Center in Grovetown.

“We’re going to be having it going on,” party Chairman Floyd Everett said.

The party is sponsoring the event along with several other community organizations, including Shepeard Community Blood Center and the Family Y.

Pupils can get free school supplies, and haircuts for boys and hairdressing for girls will be provided by Augusta Technical College cosmetology students, Everett said.

“(We want to) get these kids energized,” he said, “help get them in a good mood.”

Other activities and services will be available, including blood pressure screening, blood donations, mortgage counseling, neighborhood banking, college recruiters and voter registration, identification and education.

Those attending the event can learn to line dance and watch stepping from area Greek organizations.

Also on Saturday, the Columbia County School System will hold a safety fair at Greenbrier High School.

The fair, which runs from noon to 5 p.m., features guest speakers addressing gang awareness and self-destructive behaviors, drug awareness and bullying, and juvenile laws. Separate sessions are scheduled for parents, high school students and middle school pupils.

Exhibits will focus on child safety issues including texting and driving, cyber safety, sports injury prevention, behavioral health, addiction treatment, teen illnesses and disease prevention, cyber-savvy parents, and school safety officers.
