Augusta area spelling champ Rachael Cundey failed to make it into Round 7 of the National Spelling Bee Thursday afternoon after misspelling “cheyney.”
Still, the rising eighth-grader at Lakeside Middle School earned a spot in the semifinals, which she previously said was her goal for the academic contest held annually in Washington, D.C.
The semifinals started Thursday and the finals were held that night.
This was the fourth trip to the national bee for Rachael, who still has one more year of eligibility. She has not lost a county or regional spelling bee since she started competing as a fourth-grader at South Columbia Elementary School.
Before erring on cheyney, woolen fabric used in the 17th and 18th centuries, Rachael correctly spelled “storis” and “nefast” in rounds fifth and sixth, respectively.
