Masque of Silence was formed by a group of friends about two years ago to perform in a youth explosion hosted by Old Storm Branch Baptist Church.
When they performed, the group of teens felt a spiritual connection and knew it was something they wanted to continue doing.
“After we danced our song, every single one of us caught the spirit,” said Rochell Fulmer, 18. “You can’t experience something like that and never do it again.”
Masque of Silence is a mime performance team that uses miming to minister and spread the message about God and faith. They chose miming because they wanted to do something that would set them apart and still share the message of God, said AJ Pryor, who is a member of Old Storm Branch.
“People sing at my church, they do praise dancing at my church, but no one at my church had really seen mime until we started,” said the 16-year-old. “We decided that miming was a new way to get our point across.”
Since then, the group has expanded to about 15 members. They perform at area churches, libraries, nursing homes, and community events, including a comedy show, and for the Boys & Girls Club of Augusta. They also participate in community service outreach.
Many of the group’s members are in the North Augusta High School marching band. They use techniques they learn from being in the band and connect it to what they do in miming, said Fulmer.
