Grovetown Department of Public Safety Director Al Robinson applied for early retirement Tuesday in the midst of an external investigation city officials recently launched into his department.
Robinson, who has been with the department since 1988, applied for early retirement, Mayor George James said.
Robinson’s resignation letter said he was retiring for “personal reasons,” James said.
“He’s quit. He’s retiring,” James said. “He said he’s ready to move on and wanted to put in for his retirement.”
Robinson’s resignation comes amid an investigation into claims of misconduct by a Public Safety employee. Allegations surfaced in March and city officials hired a private investigator to research the claims.
City Council members heard an oral report from the investigator during a closed session of an April 9 meeting. They opted to wait two weeks for the investigator’s formal report before taking action on the allegations.
James wouldn’t comment on if Robinson’s resignation was connected to the investigation.
A phone message left Thursday afternoon for city attorney Brendan Fleming wasn’t immediately returned.
After serving as a deputy sheriff in Randolph County, Ga., Robinson was hired by the Grovetown department in 1988 as road patrol officer. He was named the city’s first full-time investigator in 1994 and was promoted to captain in 1995.
The city council appointed him Director of Public Safety in June 2000.
Robinson could not be reached for comment Thursday.
James said city officials will soon solicit applications to fill the position from inside and outside the department.
Capt. Gary Owens, the department’s Public Information Officer, will serve as interim director.
