University Hospital is securing its future footprint in the Grovetown area with the recent purchase of six acres next to the Gateway shopping center.
The land was purchased Feb. 28 for $900,000 after University Health Inc. voted to approve the sale a few days earlier.
“It was purchased because of the extensive growth in Grovetown,” said University Communications Specialist Erica Cline. “We do know that there’s not enough out-patient services out in that area to meet the demand of that growth.”
Cline said there are no immediate plans to develop the property.
“There’s no timeline,” she said. “It’s basically looking ahead to the future.”
The parcel is located next to Walmart at the Gateway Boulevard and Branch Court intersection.
University already has two health care campuses in Martinez and Evans. The Evans campus, initially 68 acres, now includes four professional buildings as well as the Brandon Wilde retirement community.
In addition to buying property near Grovetown, University’s board approved in February spending $1.2 million to purchase 40 acres near Thomson with plans of building a new hospital to replace McDuffie Regional Medical Center.
