As more people are choosing texting as a primary source of communication, the Columbia County Recreation and Events Department is joining the trend.
Residents can now sign up to receive text messages informing them of upcoming county events, recreation game cancellations and sports registration.
“It’s just a quicker way to get the word out about those kinds of things,” said county Recreation and Events Manager Stacie Adkins.
Adkins first proposed the idea in November at a Community and Leisure Services Committee meeting.
After staff was trained on using the service, Adkins said the next step is to build membership into their database.
As of Wednesday, 277 people had registered.
To sign up to receive recreation updates, people simply need to text “ccrec” to 82672. For event notifications, “ccevents” should be messaged to that same number.
“It’s very easy,” she said. “Even for us to send out a message, it’s very user-friendly.”
Those who register can decide at any time to halt the service by texting “stop” to 82672, she added.
Standard text messaging rates apply for each person participating in the program.
Adkins sent out the first message in mid-February about spring baseball and softball registration.
Adkins believes the new feature will be especially useful in letting people know if a game has been canceled because of bad weather.
“There are numbers you can call, but sometimes we cannot get those updated fast enough,” she said. “If people are getting these messages, it saves their time. It saves our time.”
