Food Bowl raises money for food bank

Posted: March 7, 2012 - 1:00am

Raising money to help feed the area’s hungry is what the Empty Bowl is all about, and this year’s event will be from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Sunday.

Sponsored by the Augusta Jewish Community Center and Golden Harvest Food Bank, the event includes a luncheon with a variety of soups, breads and desserts, along with a silent auction and raffle. Each guest leaves with a ceramic bowl made by local students and artists.

“The original Empty Bowl event served lunch guests a simple meal of soup and bread in a beautifully hand-crafted ceramic bowl made by local students and artists,” said Ashlee Brewer, public information coordinator for Golden Harvest Food Bank. “The guests would then keep the bowl as a reminder of hunger in the world. Humble beginnings have grown to a community event that helps many each year.”

Now in its 11th year, the Empty Bowl brings together local artists and students who work for months to craft the bowls. Area restaurants, caterers and food companies provide the food while other businesses and individuals provide prizes for the silent auction and raffle.

A logo contest also is an important part of the event. The winning art serves as the T-shirt design for that year’s Empty Bowl.

This year’s winner is Westside High School student Rebecca Houge, whose submission was selected from 367 entries from area elementary, middle and high school students.

Advance tickets for Empty Bowl 2012 are on sale now. Adult tickets cost $15, and tickets for children ages 2-10 are $5. Tickets purchased at the door will cost $20 for adults and $7.50 for children. There is no charge for infants or children under the age of 2. Each ticket holder will have their choice of a ceramic bowl. Additional bowls may be purchased for $10 each.

Last year’s Empty Bowl raised more than $20,000, with proceeds benefiting both the Augusta Jewish Community Center and Golden Harvest Food Bank, Brewer said. On average, about 300 people attend the event.
