Donna Spence is back in the tanning business.

Having owned The Sun Deck and Summer Illusions Tanning & Swimwear, she took a break in 2008 to help take care of family. She opened Donna’s Tanning Deck inside Designing Women in January.

She was working at Designing Women as a hairdresser and bought the tanning portion of the business.

Spence is a 1984 graduate of Midland Valley High School. She said she has been interested in cosmetology since she was a child.

“I’ve always done hair ever since I was a little girl,” she said. “I would get out the baby dolls and cut their hair.”

She attended Aiken School of Cosmetology after high school.

Spence enjoys being her own boss. Before beginning her cosmetology career, she founded Little Tikes Daycare in Graniteville, which operated for eight years.

“I’m a people person,” she said. “I don’t meet a stranger. I love being around people.”

Spence enjoys making people feel good about themselves when they leave, whether it’s sporting a new tan or hairstyle.

“You just meet different people from all over,” she said.

Tanning options include air brushing. Spence’s package specials are $8 for a single visit, $20 for five visits, $35 for 10 visits or $50 monthly rate.

Haircuts are $12 and up.

Donna’s Tanning Deck is open 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays.
