The Columbia County Sheriff’s Office is looking for a person of interest in connection to a Wednesday night burglary of a Martinez apartment that resulted in one burglar receiving fatal gunshot wounds.

Edward Albert Brown III, 19, of the 2200 block of Bridgeton Road in Augusta, is wanted by authorities for questioning. Brown is described as 5-foot-8 and weighing about 130 pounds.

The burglary happened at about 7:30 p.m. at a Petersburg Square apartment.

Justin Anthony Stephens, 19, of Grovetown, and an unidentified accomplice were both dressed in black and wearing bandanas over their faces when they knocked on an apartment door and forced their way inside, according to authorities.

The renter’s 15-year-old son shot Stephens twice with a .22-caliber rifle. Stephens, who was pronounced dead at the scene, died from a gunshot to his back, said Columbia County Coroner Vernon Collins.

The teen will not be charged as his actions are considered “justifiable homicide,” said sheriff’s Capt. Steve Morris.

Stephens’ accomplice ran away from the scene.
