The trial of a Harlem 15-year-old accused of shooting his friend and neighbor a year ago is scheduled to start Monday.
Lacy Aaron Schmidt, of Miles Road, is charged with murder, theft by taking and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.
He’s accused of fatally shooting Alana Calahan, 14, inside her Miles Road home in Harlem on Jan. 31, 2011.
The trial will be held at the Columbia County courthouse in Evans before Superior Court Judge Michael Annis.
Authorities say the Harlem Middle School eighth-grader was shot as she sat at a computer in her family’s dining room. She was dragged outside, and Schmidt initially said he saw an intruder.
Eventually, Schmidt said he was fumbling with the 9-mm handgun, which belonged to Alana’s father, when it went off.
Authorities found the gun case, owner’s manual, a box of ammunition, an MP3 player and a digital camera belonging to the Calahans in Schmidt’s home.
Schmidt is being held at the Regional Youth Detention Center without bond while awaiting trial.
