Jewish Community Center to hold annual dinner Sunday

Posted: December 21, 2011 - 1:02am

The Augusta Jewish Community Center will hold its annual Hanukkah latke and salmon dinner Sunday at 6 p.m.

The Augusta Jewish Community Center, at 898 Weinberger Way, off Furys Ferry Road in Evans, counts the Hanukkah event as one of its more well-attended.

“We always have at least 100 and in some years we have had as many as 230,” said Augusta Jewish Community Center Executive Director Leah Ronen.

Past events included a children’s program, but because many of the AJCC’s usual attendees will be out of town, there will not be a children’s program this year.

“Many of our children are away that week,” said Ronen. “However, there will be a Hanukkah sing-a-long.”

Cost of the dinner for members is $12 for adults and $6 for children ages 4-12. There is no cost for children 3 and under, and there is a $35 maximum family cost. For nonmembers, the cost is $15 for adults, $8 for children ages 4-12 and a $50 maximum family cost.

Attendees are asked to bring their own menorah and candles. Menorahs will be provided for those who don’t have one.

Prizes will be awarded for homemade menorahs that are the most unusual, most traditional, cutest and for the most creative use of materials.

Each child also will receive a gift.

Candy will be sold by the BBYO, a Jewish youth organization that includes members of all three local synagogues and unaffiliated children.

To make reservations for the Chanukah dinner, call the Augusta Jewish Community Center at (706) 228-3636.
