The Grovetown High School band performs at halftime of the Westside game. The band is holding the second annual Grovetown High Band of Warriors Invitational Band Competition Saturday.

Marching bands from across the area and the state are ready to put on a good show.

Up to 11 bands, including many from Columbia County high schools, will march onto the Grovetown High School football field Saturday for the second annual Grovetown Warrior Invitational marching band competition.

"It was a blast last year," said Debby Turner, executive director of the event and a member of the Grovetown Band of Warriors Booster Association. "We're really excited about it."

Eight bands and about 1,000 students performed in 2010. About 600 spectators attended, Turner said.

The gates open at noon.

Area high school bands scheduled to perform at the competition include Greenbrier, Lakeside, Thomson and Lincoln County, along with bands from Jeff Davis, Southeast Bulloch County, South Effingham and Henry County high schools.

"(The inaugural competition) was a great day for all the students," Grovetown High Band Director Brian Toney said. "It gives them a chance to be in the spotlight."

Grovetown will be performing, but not competing, because it is hosting the sanctioned Georgia Marching Band Series event. Bands will perform within the same classifications that their schools compete in athletically and will be judged by a panel.

The eight top-scoring bands will perform in the finale, which starts at 7 p.m.

"All will perform the final show under the lights," Turner said, adding that the Grovetown band will provide a special show. "This isn't your usual half-time show. I love it. You get all those props in there. The kids in costumes. They are performing their hearts out."

Admission is $5 per person.

Proceeds from the event will be used to purchase band uniforms for Grovetown High. Clothing the band costs from $60,000 to $90,000.

"We need those uniforms bad," Turner said.

Currently, the band wears second-hand uniforms.

Refreshments will be available and several vendors will be selling their wares.

"We're really excited about it," Turner said. "I think it is going to be a good thing for everybody."
