A Grovetown man was recently arrested after his stepson accused him of molesting him.

Ronald Wade Stanley, 44, of the 400 block of Millwater Court, was charged with aggravated child molestation and sexual exploitation of children.

Lakeside High's first valedictorian now commanding submarine  05/16/12 - 12:14am

Valedictorians from Columbia County’s high schools are perfecting their speeches in preparation for Saturday’s graduation ceremonies.

This time 23 years ago, Navy Commander Adam Palmer was in the same situation, writing the speech he’d give as Lakeside High School’s first valedictorian in 1989.

From that moment, Palmer never fathomed the depths to which his career would sink.

In a ceremony this past fall, Palmer took the helm of the U.S.S. West Virginia – a nuclear-powered, ballistic missile submarine, also known as SSBN 736.

Evans' Crozier commits to play at Mercer  05/16/12 - 12:09am

Justin Crozier considers himself a natural at goalkeeper.

But the Evans High School senior just found his calling to soccer a little more than two years ago.

At a signing ceremony Thursday, Crozier committed to play for Mercer University.

“It’s surprising,” Crozier said of being asked to play at a Division 1 school.

As a sophomore, Crozier, 18, started playing soccer with friends.

“Then I started getting into playing in the goal; just started picking it up once I realized I was just a natural with it,” Crozier said.

• A Lakeside Middle School pupil went before the school system hearing officer on May 1, 2012, for an accumulation of offenses and was expelled for the remainder of this school year and the first semester of next school year.

• A Columbia County Alternative School student went before the hearing officer on May 1, 2012, for truancy and was expelled for the remainder of this school year.

School board to seek budget help from county  05/16/12 - 12:07am

The Columbia County School Board said Tuesday they might look to the county government for help solving their budget woes.

The county Tax Com­missioner’s Office charges the school system 2.5 percent of taxes collected on its behalf each school year.

The board agreed during a budget study session to send a letter to county commissioners asking them to cut that percentage.

Superintendent Charles Nagle told the board that just half a percent cut would save the school system nearly $400,000.

Summer Reading program kick-off on Saturday  05/16/12 - 12:04am

As the last day of school marks the beginning of summer vacation, the Columbia County Library’s Summer Reading Program is about to begin.

The program is designed to encourage children to read during the summer, keeping their skills sharp while school is out, said children’s librarian Natalie Pulley of the Columbia County Library in Evans.

A kick-off celebration is planned for 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday at the library in Evans.

“Dream Big” is the program theme for children. “Own the Night” is the theme for young adults.

As the school year winds down, summer camp organizers are gearing up for a busy summer.

“This is a very busy time of year,” said Lynda Jaremski, camp administrator and Community Program director at the Augusta Jewish Community Center.

Starting Monday, the center offers a variety of camps for ages 3-13, including the traditional summer day camp featuring sports, games, creative arts and swimming to week-long specialities like archery, cooking, clay arts, soccer and fashion camps.

Grovetown twins win val and sal for Saturday graduations  05/16/12 - 12:03am

Grovetown High School graduates a pair of twins Saturday as its valedictorian and salutatorian.

Emily and Erin Chizmar, both 18, respectively attained the first and second spots of their senior class with smarts and a strong sense of competition.

“When the (school) year started I think I was fourth in the my class,” Emily recalled. “I remember going to all my teachers and telling them, ‘Hey, I need a 100 in your class so I can be valedictorian.’”

But that sense of competition doesn’t extend to each other.

“We’re more competitive with ourselves,” Erin said.
