SPORTS: Briarwood boys, girls advance. Thomson ready

Posted: February 9, 2012 - 11:27am

Both Briarwood basketball teams won the first game of the region championships this week, ensuring berths in the state playoffs.

Thomson High School’s boys begin the region tournament at 8:30 p.m. Monday, facing Hephzibah at Josey. The winner will advance to play Butler at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Thomson’s girls won a first-round bye. They will play at Josey at 4 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 16, facing the winner of Tuesday’s game between Harlem and Hephzibah. The winner of that game will play again at 4 p.m. Friday, Feb. 17.

Briarwood’s boys survived a first-round scare Wednesday night at Piedmont Academy at Monticello, but won a 67-64 overtime victory over Brentwood Academy of Sandersville. The Bucs play again at 5:30 p.m. today, against Gatewood.

The Briarwood girls defeated Covenant Academy on Tuesday, and will face Brentwood at 7 tonight.

Win or lose tonight, the Briarwood teams advance to championship or consolation games on Friday. Those games will determine seeding for the state playoffs.
