After winning the Georgia Independent School Association Region 1-AAA boys and girls cross country titles the week before, Augusta Prep head coach Tom Holodak thought both his squads could compete for state championships.
On Saturday, at Loganville Christian Academy, both Cavaliers teams did that, falling just short of their ultimate goals. The Cavaliers were GISA Class AAA state runners-up, a scant seven points behind Southland Academy and nine points ahead of the Heritage School while the girls team placed 19 points behind state champion Mount de Sales.
“I was extremely proud of both groups,” said Holodak.
“We set goals and they met all of them. Every kid ran to the best of their ability.”
John Earwood (17:17) and David Chen (18:07) registered top-10 finishes, coming in third and ninth, respectively. Hamp Burnside (18:34) was 16th, Mark Tisler (18:37) was 18th and Connor Turner (18:41) was 19th.
The Holodak sisters, eighth-grader Jamie (19:56.12) and senior Jodie (20:45.35), paced the Lady Cavaliers, finishing second and seventh, respectively.
“It’s pretty exciting,” said Jamie Holodak, who was 13 seconds behind the winner.
“As an eighth-grader I definitely wasn’t expecting it so I’m pretty happy.”
Mati Gibbs (22:27) was 29th, Sidney Isaac (23:01.33) was 30th and Gabrielle Turner (23:06.03) was 31st.
