It's getting easier to predict how teams will perform each week

Posted: October 16, 2013 - 12:05am

Last Week: 6-1

Season Total: 33-9
(78.6 percent)

I had a good week picking games, including nearly nailing a few scores exactly. I predicted Augusta Prep would win 48-14. The Cavaliers won 44-14. I also had Warner Robins beating Greenbrier 49-7. The Demons came away with a 48-7 victory. I projected the Grovetown final to be 55-13 Northside Warner Robins. The game finished 52-12. I also had Harlem winning 25-20. The Bulldogs improved to 5-2 with a 28-26 win. I am getting a good feel for some of the teams. This week we have a couple of in-county matchups to watch.

Evans (3-3, 1-2) vs. Grovetown (1-5, 0-3)

Last Week: Evans lost to Jones County 27-15 / Grovetown lost to Northside Warner Robins 52-12

Last Meeting: Grovetown won 38-9 last year and owns a 2-1 record all-time vs. Evans

Grovetown is allowing 48 points per contest. In the Warriors’ defense, they have played as tough a schedule as anyone in Georgia, with games versus Washington County, North Augusta, Northside Warner Robins and Lakeside. The Knights are much improved from a year ago and will pose a major test for Grovetown.

Evans 32

Grovetown 17

Greenbrier (0-6, 0-3) at Lakeside (4-2, 2-1)

Last Week: Greenbrier lost to Warner Robins 48-7 / Lakeside topped Houston County 21-20

Last Meeting: Lakeside won 34-17 last year and lead the all-time series 8-7 over the Pack.

Lakeside pulled off a tremendous come-from- behind win over a very good Houston County team last week. Those are the type games you have to win when you are fighting for the playoffs in a difficult region. The Panthers’ offense was slowed a bit in the 21-20 win over the Bears, but still average 30.3 points per contest. Greenbrier, on the other hand, has managed only 30 points this season (5 ppg.). Lakeside should have no trouble getting its 14th consecutive win over a Columbia County opponent. The Panthers have not lost a game within the county in five years.

Lakeside 39

Greenbrier 7

Harlem (5-2, 1-2) at Josey (0-6, 0-2)

(Game will be played Thursday)

Last Week: Harlem edged East Laurens 28-26 / Josey lost to Dublin 53-0

Last Meeting: Harlem won last year 35-8 and lead the series with Josey 7-6

Harlem should continue its terrific season this weekend. Josey has been the worst team in the CSRA in 2013. The Eagles have scored only 22 points all season, being outscored 215-22. The Bulldogs should have no trouble running the football and posting win No. 6 on the season.

Harlem 41

Josey 6

Augusta Christian (2-5, 2-4) vs. Hammond
(5-3, 4-2)

Last Week: ACS lost to Porter Gaud 38-21 / Hammond beat Ben Lippen 41-22

Last Meeting: The Lions topped Hammond 21-14 in last year’s SCISA state championship game (they also beat them 29-28 in the regular season)

Both teams are not playing as well as they are accustomed to, but Hammond has won three consecutive games and seems to be rounding into form. The Lions have lost a lot of close games and cannot seem to come up with the big plays when they need them.

Hammond 43

Augusta Christian 29

Augusta Prep (6-1) at Anderson (7-0)

Last Week: AP topped Skipstone Academy 43-18 / Anderson beat the Georgia Force 56-32

Last Meeting: The Cavaliers won last year’s match-up 24-21

This will be Augusta Prep’s toughest opponent so far this season. Anderson is averaging an eye-popping 59 points per contest. Hopefully, the Cavs can use their ground game to keep the ball away from Anderson’s high-scoring offense, but that is a tall order.

Anderson 39

Augusta Prep 27
