Columbia County voters this year might get the opportunity to decide whether to limit the time county commissioners could serve in office.

Under a proposal offered Tuesday morning by Chairman Ron Cross during a meeting of the county’s Management and Financial Services Committee, commissioners soon will discuss whether to send a formal proposal to members of the legislative delegation.

Eight people were cited for underage drinking during a weekend party, and a Martinez man is charged with furnishing the home and alcohol for the event.

Thomas Whitney Traino Larick, 23, of the 3600 Block of Lynwood Drive, was charged with furnishing alcohol to those under 21 and with maintaining a disorderly house after deputies were called early Saturday morning to investigate a noise complaint at his residence.

Rezoning denied for proposed Grovetown subdivision   01/09/12 - 4:26pm

Columbia County planning commissioners began the new year Thursday night by resolving two rezoning issues from the past.

The board voted down a request by developers hoping to build a 76-lot subdivision off North Old Belair Road. In order for the project to work, a 21-acre parcel inside Crawford Creek would have to be purchased and pulled out of that development to create Amy Glenn.

Three people accused of serious crimes pled not guilty Friday at arraignment hearings in Evans.

Landon “Dock” Norman, 40, of Grovetown is accused of inappropriately touching a 14-year-old girl at Riverside Park in June and molesting a 16-year-old girl in the spring. He pled not guilty to aggravated sodomy, incest, child molestation and other related charges at the Columbia County Superior Court arraignment.

Norman also faces more recent charges of tampering with a witness.

A longtime catering business is under new ownership.

Cindy’s Catering, at 4015 Washington Road in Martinez, has been purchased by husband-wife team Terry and Donna John­ikin, who changed the name to CloverLeaf Catering.

CloverLeaf Catering is also the name of the Johni­kins’ home-based business, which they have run for four years.

An Evans man announced today that he intends to run for the Columbia County Commission next year.


Butch Holley said he plans to run for the District 3 seat, currently held by Charles Allen.


According to a press release announcing Holley's candidacy: "It is his goal to represent everyone by listening to what they have to say, relaying information to his constituents, and continuing to provide the opportunities for both a high quality of living and growth in the business sector of Columbia County."

A ceremonial sword meant for a Columbia County native and War of 1812 hero will be returned to Georgia, from where it disappeared more than a century ago.


A group formed to orchestrate the return of the Appling Sword met the Dec. 31 deadline to raise $100,000 to purchase it from a private collector.


"I am so excited," Appling Sword Campaign Chairwoman Susan Lemesis said.


The intricately carved, gold-handled ceremonial sword was commissioned by the Georgia Legislature in 1814 to be presented to Lt. Col. Daniel Appling.
