Annual Ice Bowl will benefit Golden Harvest   01/16/12 - 12:12pm

The annual Disc Golf Ice Bowl is set to take place Saturday at Patriot’s Park.

Though typically a warm-weather sport, disc golf’s Ice Bowl tradition started in 1987 and is held throughout North America and Europe each year in January and February.

Each bowl supports a charity. Locally, the Golden Harvest Food Bank benefits.

Columbia Road reopened after smoke causes visibility issues   01/14/12 - 7:25pm

Columbia Road has reopened Saturday afternoon after heavy smoke from a woods fire near Patriot’s Park limited motorists’ visibility.

The fire was reported at about 12:45 p.m. and caused smoke to cloud Columbia Road between William Few Parkway and the Ivy Falls subdivision, Columbia County Emergency and Operations Director Pam Tucker said in an email.

Responding to the fire were ten units from Martinez-Columbia Fire Rescue. The Georgia Forestry Commission also sent a tractor and plane to help extinguish the fire.

Sunday sales could begin Labor Day weekend   01/13/12 - 6:42pm

Carryout packages of alcohol could be sold on the Sunday before Labor Day if commissioners approve a referendum Tuesday - and if voters agree.

Set for vote at Tuesday’s County Commission meeting, a resolution would allow voters to decide during the July 31 party primaries whether to allow Sunday package sales of liquor, beer and wine.

If Tuesday’s resolution passes, and if a majority of voters in the referendum agree, then Sunday sales would start Sept. 1 – Labor Day weekend.

Columbia County attorney worked on Magnolia Trace   01/13/12 - 5:54pm

A Columbia County official confirmed Friday speculation that the county attorney also acted as the closing attorney for Martinez land on which an “affordable housing” development is under construction.

Facebook group “Say No to Magnolia Trace Housing Project” posted Thursday to the Web site that Columbia County attorney Doug Batchelor worked on the deal to close the sale of the property on Old Ferry Road. It didn’t specify if Batchelor worked for the seller or buyer.

Tickets for the American Red Cross’ largest local fundraiser, the 18th annual Boot Scoot Boogie Bash, are going fast.

Only about 20 tickets costing $100 are still available as of Thursday for the event to be held Feb. 4 at the Savannah Rapids Pavilion.

Beginning at 6 p.m., guests will feast on a chicken barbecue dinner prepared by area firefighters and Wife Saver while listening to a country music. A cash bar will also be set up.

A Grovetown man was arrested Tuesday for allegedly molesting three young girls.

Justo Vazquez Espinosa, 38, of Williams Street, was charged with three counts of child molestation.

Espinosa is the boyfriend of a woman who babysat the three girls – ages 6, 7 and 9.

Grovetown Department of Public Safety Investigator Donovan Jones said Espinosa is accused of kissing and fondling last month all three girls multiple times.

One of the girls told her mother about the incidents and the mother called police.

Three Columbia County Food Lion stores will be closing, company officials announced Wednesday.

As part of a decision to strengthen its U.S. portfolio, Food Lion parent company Delhaize America will be closing 126 of its grocery stores.

Two of the three grocery stores to close in Columbia County were built less than three years ago, 526 N. Belair Road in Evans and 3851 Evans To Locks Road in Martinez. The company is also shutting down the store at 4087 Old Petersburg Road in Martinez.

All stores will close within 30 days.

Got leftover cooking oil? Don’t throw it away.

Columbia County’s Water Utility and the Augusta Utilities Department want to keep it out of our landfills and sewer lines and will offer used cooking oil recycling from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. Friday and from 8 a.m. until noon Saturday.

Columbia County’s oil drop-off location is 4325 Evans to Locks Road, and the Augusta site is at 1840 Wylds Road.

Students will be allowed to request transfers   01/10/12 - 9:25pm

Columbia County students will be allowed to request a transfer to one of seven schools next year under guidelines presented Tuesday to the Columbia County Board of Education.

The so-called "permissive transfers," created under a three-year-old Georgia law, allow students to request attendance at a different school within the same county when space is available.

A former Columbia County commissioner convicted last month of molesting his adopted daughter will likely be sentenced Jan. 27.

A jury found Scott Dean, 42, guilty of two counts of child molestation on Dec. 16. After the verdict was announced, his attorney requested that Dean be sentenced at a later time.

Dean faces 5 to 20 years for each count, Assistant District Attorney Parks White said.
