Three vehicles involved in Friday morning Martinez crash   01/27/12 - 10:39am

No one was seriously injured Friday morning in a three-vehicle Martinez crash.

The collision occurred about 9 a.m. on South Belair Road at Oakley-Pirkle Road, when a Toyota 4Runner northbound on Belair turned into the path of a southbound Chevrolet Suburban, according to a Columbia County Sheriff's Office traffic patrol deputy.

The Suburban struck the right side of the 4Runner, flipping the smaller SUV onto Oakley-Pirkle where it landed on the front of a Dodge Dakota pickup waiting at the traffic light.

NASHVILLE - Kenny Chesney’s steamy duet, You and Tequila with Grace Potter, continues to radiate heat.

The song helped Chesney to nine Academy of Country Music Awards nominations Thursday, including the top honor of entertainer of the year. Jason Aldean, next with six nominations, Brad Paisley, Blake Shelton and 2011 winner Taylor Swift round out the fan-voted category.

Lady Antebellum has five nominations, Paisley has four and several are deadlocked at three, including Swift.

A former Columbia County commissioner convicted of child molestation was sentenced to prison Friday morning.

Superior Court Judge James G. Blanchard Jr. ordered Scott Dean to serve 20 years in prison followed by 20 years of probation during a sentencing hearing in Evans.

“In my mind, he should be treated no differently than anyone else convicted of a similar crime,” said Blanchard.

Columbia County authorities are looking for a man they say cloned a Tennessee man’s debit card and used it locally.


The Church Hill, Tenn., man said a representative of his bank notified him on Dec. 30 that someone made four transactions in Columbia County totaling $989, according to a Columbia County Sheriff’s Office incident report.


The man said someone made a duplicate of his debit card and used it twice at the ATM machine at the Circle K at 4256 Washington Road in Evans totaling $505.

Club Car has completed a round of layoffs that involves the Columbia County facility, company spokesman Brian Formato said Monday.

“We are continually monitoring the economic conditions to ensure appropriate staffing levels which has resulted in a recent reduction in workforce,” Formato said. “As a business, we will move forward and, as always, concentrate on the needs of our customers while continuing to position Club Car for long term success as a global, task-oriented vehicle company.”

The Augusta area is losing one of its four Ryan’s buffets.

A spokeswoman for Buffets Inc., which owns Ryan’s and HomeTown Buffet, said the restaurant on Bobby Jones Expressway is among the 81 underperforming restaurants that will immediately close.

Buffets Inc. filed for a pre-arranged bankruptcy Wednesday, its second bankruptcy in four years.

The Ryan’s locations on Knox Avenue in North Augusta, Whiskey Road in Aiken and Peach Orchard Road in Augusta will remain open.

A lane on a portion of Cox Road in Evans will be shifted today while work crews cut into the road to repair a water line.

Westbound motorists will need to maneuver around the work site near SRP Drive until 2 p.m., according to an email from Columbia County Emergency and Operations Director Pam Tucker.

Motorists using the road should make plans to avoid the route or allow extra time to traverse it.

Truck flips on Hardy McManus Road, alcohol suspected cause   01/20/12 - 8:24pm

Alcohol is suspected to be a factor in an Evans single-vehicle wreck Friday that left a truck overturned on Hardy McManus Road.

The wreck happened at about 5:30 p.m. when Brandon Castillo, 21, of Evans, was driving his red Ford F-150 north on Hardy McManus Road near the Woodruff Landing neighborhood, said Columbia County sheriff’s Deputy Bobby Bradford.

For unknown reasons, Castillo drove his truck off the road and overcorrected, causing the vehicle to flip and land in the middle of Hardy McManus Road, Bradford said.

New planning commissioner introduced at meeting   01/22/12 - 6:13am

The Columbia County Planning Commission welcomed a new member to its board Thursday.

Planning Commission Chairwoman Jean Garniewicz introduced Martinez accountant Darryl James to represent District 4 at the start of their bi-monthly meeting.

James replaces Harlem resident Bob Newkirk, who served on the board for three years after being appointed in 2009 by former county Commissioner Scott Dean.

“We’re looking forward to an interesting year,” said Garniewicz, ending the meeting.

A sentencing hearing has been set next week for a former Columbia County commissioner and Harlem mayor convicted last month of molesting his adopted daughter.

Scott Dean, 42, was found guilty Dec. 16 on two counts of child molestation. His sentencing hearing is set for Jan. 27, according to a listing on Superior Court Judge James G. Blanchard’s calendar.

Dean faces 5 to 20 years for each count, Assistant District Attorney Parks White said.
