Columbia County authorities arrested two men Thursday on drug charges.

Sheriff’s Office narcotics investigators executed a search warrant Thursday on the Grovetown home of Charles Joseph Howard, 29, on Sylvan Lake Drive in Grovetown.

Authorities found more than 2 pounds of marijuana, more than a pound of hash, a small amount of mushrooms and nine bottles of Equibol, an anabolic steroid and horse feed supplement. Investigators also seized a 9-mm pistol, drug paraphernalia, $4,385 in cash, a 2005 Nissan Altima and a Harley-Davidson motorcycle.

Connecting existing bicycle and pedestrian networks across the Augusta region is key to a new plan unveiled at a Thursday meeting.

The Augusta Regional Transportation Study revealed the new draft during a public meeting in Evans that suggested ways to improve, expand and make bike and pedestrian pathways more user-friendly.

The draft is an update to the regional bicycle and pedestrian plan that was adopted in 2003.

The long-range plan also looks at new policies and programs to promote a safe and inviting network of biking and pedestrian routes.

Two regional weekly newspapers, The McDuffie Mirror in Thomson and The Citizen News, of Edgefield, will close next month, it was announced Wednesday.

Their readers will be offered refunds for subscriptions and any commitment of their advertisers will be compensated.

Artist Rick Springfield will perform in Columbia County this June as WBBQ celebrates its 65th anniversary.

Tickets for the radio station’s 65th Birthday Bash at Evans Towne Center Park currently are on sale. The concert is at 6:30 p.m. June 8.

Springfield’s hit, “Jessie’s Girl,” topped the charts in the 1980s. He also released songs, “I’ve Done Everything For You” and “Don’t Talk to Strangers.”

“We just thought that he would appeal to a lot of the demographic in Columbia County,” said county Community Events Specialist Keela Colombraro.

Fatal shooting ruled justifiable homicide   03/21/12 - 9:33am

The death of an Augusta man fatally shot during a Feb. 24 shooting on Blanchard Road was determined to be a justifiable homicide, Columbia County sheriff’s Capt. Steve Morris said Tuesday.

Patrick Smith, 33, was shot when he and accomplice Anthony Graddy, 35, of the 4300 block of Creek View Drive in Hephzibah, entered the home at 627 Blanchard Road in Evans to rob those inside, Morris said.

The Columbia County Property Tax Office returned to its office today.

Due to renovations, the tax office moved for a week to the county Motor Vehicle Office.

Both officers are located in Building C of the Evans Government Center on Ronald Reagan Drive.

The renovations consisted of new carpet and paint, said Tax Commissioner Kay Allen.

Grovetown city officials approved paying for an investigation into a city Department of Public Safety employee Monday, but refuse to say who or why.

City Council members held a closed-door session for about 45 minutes Monday afternoon. When they emerged, the council voted to spend up to $3,000 for a private investigator to look into allegations of misconduct against a public safety employee.

Harlem puts Sunday sales on ballot   03/21/12 - 12:09am

Harlem officials agreed Monday to let residents decide whether to sell packaged alcohol inside the city on Sunday.

At the monthly city council meeting, they approved placing a Sunday sales referendum on the ballot in the July 31 primary election. In January, they asked City Attorney Barry Fleming to draw up the necessary resolutions to place the referendum on the primary ballot.

The referendum would allow the sale of packaged alcohol at convenience, grocery and package stores from 12:30-11z;30 p.m. on Sunday.
