Man sought in Rhinehart's robbery   04/18/12 - 10:36am

Authorities are looking for a man who robbed an employee of Rhineharts restaurant at gunpoint early Friday as she sat inside her vehicle in the restaurant parking lot.

The man pulled a small handgun on the 35-year-old victim while she and another woman were sitting in her vehicle at about 12:30 a.m. after closing the Evans restaurant.

The man put the gun to the victim’s head and demanded she give him two money bags. He also made the victim give him her iPhone 4S before he ran into the woods behind the restaurant.

A mother was sent to jail and 25 minors, mostly Lakeside High School students, were cited after Columbia County deputies broke up an after-prom party in Evans early Saturday morning.

Lakeside High mom arrested for after-prom party for minors   04/16/12 - 7:40pm

A mother was sent to jail and 20 Lakeside High School students and three other minors were cited after Columbia County deputies broke up an after-prom party in Evans early Saturday morning. Around 1 a.m., deputies were called to the 3500 block of Greenway Drive in reference to a noise complaint, a sheriff’s report says. When deputies arrived at the house, they saw several teenagers drinking in the driveway. The teens scattered, some running behind the house toward Furys Ferry Road, according to the report.

Governor signs bill for vote on term limits   04/13/12 - 4:41pm

ATLANTA – Gov. Nathan Deal’s office announced Friday afternoon that he had signed into law House Bill 1167, which allows voters to decide if they want to limit how long Columbia County commissioners can stay in office.

Ballots in November’s General Election will ask county voters if they want to hold the commissioners and chairman to two, four-year terms. If it passes, it will take effect in January, and would apply to sitting commissioners and those elected this year by preventing any of them to “succeed himself or herself in office more than once.”

A Harlem woman accused of using a waitress’ identity to apply for student loans for her son was sentenced to federal prison Wednesday.

Regina Beard, 43, pleaded guilty to bank fraud and was sentenced to 46 months in prison at a hearing in U.S. Federal Court.

Evidence showed that Beard used the identity of a waitress at the Evans restaurant she managed to apply for student loans for her son to attend college. Beard did not repay the loans.

Former Harlem High teacher arrested for sex with student   04/13/12 - 12:45pm

A former Harlem High School ROTC teacher accused of having sex with a student was arrested Wednesday.

Mitchell Sivas, 57, was charged with sexual assault against a person in custody after his attorney brought him to the McDuffie County Law Enforcement Center at about 2:30 p.m., said Thomson Police Chief Joe Nelson.

A family-owned Ford dealership in Thomson will soon close it’s doors after more than 60 years.

Culpepper Ford, 2210 Washington Road, will continue sales through Saturday and possibly into next week, owner Bobby Culpepper said Wednesday.

“The economy is just so bad,” Culpepper said of the dealership that has been run by his family since his father opened the first location in Thomson in 1949.

Harlem Mayor Culpepper said he’s been semi-retired for three or four years while his son, Brian, ran the day-to-day operations.

Grovetown officials study investigation of public safety staffer   04/10/12 - 8:55am

Grovetown officials decided at a Monday meeting to take more time to review an investigation into allegations of misconduct by a city employee.

In late March, the city council hired a private investigator to conduct the probe of a city Department of Public Safety employee who has not been publicly identified.

After a three-hour closed session at the monthly council meeting, Mayor George James said that he and the City Council members will take two weeks to review the lengthy findings of the investigation.

A North Augusta teen drowned in Clark’s Hill Lake Sunday evening.


Uriel Diaz, 15, drowned while at West Dam Recreation Area with his cousin and a friend from Grovetown.


A Dearing couple said they saw the teen fall off his float and begin panicking when the float drifted out of reach, according to a Columbia County Sheriff’s Office incident report.


“He was not a swimmer,” Columbia County Deputy Coroner Bonnie Holloway said. “He didn’t know how to swim. The water was not over his head. He panicked.”

Georgia Attorney General Sam Olens will speak to the CSRA Republican Women’s Club meeting on Monday.

The meeting begins at 6 p.m. at the Jones Creek Clubhouse, 777 Jones Creek Drive in Evans. It is open to the public and membership is not required to attend.

Olens will discuss the recent U.S. Supreme Court hearing on the Patient Protection and Affordability Care Act. President Barack Obama signed the statute, also known as Obamacare, into law on March 23, 2010.
