Creepy! Couple sleeps through burglary   03/14/13 - 12:08pm

How’s this for creepy: A cat burglar slipped in and out of a Martinez home Tuesday, and the homeowners didn’t realize the intrusion until they woke up and found items missing.

A Maywood Drive resident called the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office Tuesday after realizing the burglar had been inside his home while the family slept.

Broun to hold pair of town hall sessions   03/18/13 - 10:49am

 


Tenth District U.S. Rep. Paul Broun will hold a pair of town hall meetings, one live and one by radio, his office announced.


“I’m looking forward to talking to as many people as possible from Columbia County in person and on the radio,” said Broun in an emailed announcement. “Town hall meetings are a great way to do this.”


The first of the meetings will be a “radio town hall” from 4 to 5 p.m. March 26 on the “Austin Rhodes Show on WGAC-AM/FM

A Grovetown man accused of molesting two teen girls was sentenced to prison Wednesday.


At sentencing hearing in Columbia County, Landon “Dock” Norman III, 41, pled guilty to first degree cruelty to children, enticing a child for indecent purposes, child molestation and criminal attempt to influence a witness. Superior Court Judge J. Carlisle Overstreet sentenced Norman to 15 years in prison followed by 10 years on probation and a $1,500 fine.

Woman says
ex-husband kidnapped, robbed her

An Evans woman called authorities early Friday and claimed her ex-husband had kidnapped her.

The 48-year-old said she came home at about 7 a.m. and found the back door kicked in. Her ex-husband jumped out of the pantry and put her in a choke hold. She said he claimed to have a gun in his pants and that he would kill her.

Schools will take on oversight of parent groups' finances   03/17/13 - 12:01am

Columbia County schools got the go-ahead Tuesday to take over financial oversight of parent volunteer groups.

School board members unanimously approved a plan that will bring the books of each booster club and Parent-Teacher Organization under school control.

Currently, schools already oversee the books of more than 60 percent of those volunteer groups, said School Superintendent Charles Nagle.

Animal rescue plans rally in Evans   03/17/13 - 12:00am

An animal rescue group ordered to close by the state is asking supporters to rally before Tuesday’s Columbia County Commission meeting.

State officials, however, say they still expect the rescue group to shut down on Monday.

Some taxpayers will get bigger refunds than expected   03/17/13 - 12:03am

A handful of Columbia County taxpayers with small overpayments on property tax bills might be getting back more than they expected.

Members of the county commission’s Management and Financial Services Committee on Tuesday asked Tax Commissioner Kay Allen to research giving larger refunds than she’d requested after learning some of the overpayments had taken place for more years than the law requires repayment.

School system will increase oversight of parent organizations   03/11/13 - 5:33pm

 


Under the shadow of an unrelated neighborhood embezzlement case, Columbia County’s school board Tuesday is expected to increase financial oversight of school organizations.


Currently, the books of roughly 18 out of 49 parent fundraiser groups at 31 schools are still kept by those organization’s boards, according to Columbia School Superintendent Charles Nagle.

The Columbia County Championship Festival in Evans is adding to its Masters week musical lineup with country music star Chris Young.


Early bird tickets are on sale for Young's headlining act Thursday night, April 11, at Evans Towne Center Park.


The concert adds to a lineup of Masters week events that being Tuesday, April 9 with the Rock Fore! Dough concert, a family day on Wednesday, April 10, and a concert from Lynyrd Skynyrd on Friday, April 12.

Several people were indicted Wednesday by a Columbia County Grand Jury.

Javantroi Perez Walden, 34, was indicted on two counts of sexual battery, simple battery, driving under the influence, fleeing, obstruction and several traffic charges in connection to a Dec. 23 incident when he assaulted a deputy and rammed a patrol car, according to court documents released Thursday.
