The trial of a former Columbia County sheriff’s deputy accused of inappropriately touching an inmate ended in a mistrial Tuesday.

Dererk Wayne McClure, 42, was indicted for sexual assault against a person in custody in Feb. 2011.

The trial began Monday and ended when Superior Court Judge Carl C. Brown Jr. declared a mistrial Tuesday afternoon, according to Assistant District Attorney Laura Stewart, who prosecuted the case.

Man accused of attacking women in three counties sentenced   03/05/13 - 6:29pm

An Appling man accused of attacking women in three counties in 2010 was sentenced to prison Monday,

Just before jury selection began in the trial of Michael Claude Maxwell, 47, he pled guilty to several charges connected to assaults of women in Columbia and Richmond as part of a plea agreement with the District Attorney's Office, according to Assistant District Attorney Grant Usry.

The incidents including a third in Edgefield County happened on July 23, 2010.

Vandals damage Evans Elementary   03/04/13 - 5:13pm

The principal of Evans Elementary School called authorities Friday because someone damaged a storage building.

Some time between Feb. 25 and Friday, someone got into a locked storage building at the school on Gibbs Road in Evans. The principal said someone wrote vulgar language on a dry erase board, threw cat feces into the room and threw up on the floor. The vandals also messed with supplies in the room, but nothing was taken.

Boyfriend crawls through drive-through window   03/04/13 - 5:06pm

A Wendy’s employee called deputies Friday night after her boyfriend crawled through the drive-through window and wouldn’t leave.

The 33-year-old employee of the restaurant at 430 S. Belair Road said her boyfriend showed up at about 11:30 p.m. wanting to borrow money. When the woman said she didn’t have any to give him, her boyfriend got upset and cursed at her. She asked him to leave, but he wouldn’t.

Riverdale, Ga., man wanted for convenience store robberies   03/04/13 - 5:01pm

Authorities are looking for a Riverdale, Ga., man wanted for robbing convenience stores in Columbia and Richmond counties last month.

Khatrell Rashon Harris, 21, of Bald Eagle Way in Riverdale, is wanted for armed robbery, possession of a weapon during the commission of a crime and possession of a weapon by a convicted felon in Columbia County and armed robbery in Richmond County, according to Columbia County sheriff’s Capt. Steve Morris.

Gay promoted as county's elections director   03/06/13 - 1:05am

Nancy Gay has been promoted to become Columbia County’s elections director, succeeding the retired Deborah Marshall.

In addition, the Columbia County Development Authority plans to hire Robert F. Bennett as that agency’s new director.

The Board of Elections named Gay, 41, formerly the county’s voter registration coordinator, to the post Monday morning, said board Chairman Larry Long.

“We recognized excellent performance and increased responsibilities” in promoting Gay, Long said. “We’re looking forward to moving forward smoothly.”

Woman assaulted by phony cab driver   03/04/13 - 1:54pm

A Grovetown woman told deputies that a cab driver tried to sexually assault her early Saturday.

The 24-year-old woman said she’d been at a downtown Augusta bar until almost 3 a.m. when she asked a bar employee to call her a cab. A newer model Checker Cab arrived. She told the driver her address, then passed out in the back seat, according to a Columbia County Sheriff’s Office incident report.

Mistletoe State Park wins state award   03/04/13 - 1:23pm

Columbia County’s Mistletoe State Park has been awarded the Best Year-Round Programming Award from the Georgia Department of Natural Resources.

Awards were presented during a recent conference co-hosted by the park system and Friends of Georgia State Parks and Historic Sites, according to an announcement from the DNR.

Primarily through the efforts of clerk Brenda Bettross, naturalist Julie Ashley and Mistletoe’s volunteers, Mistletoe State Park offered numerous programs to more than 5,000 guests during 2012.

Four Evans women were recently arrested for lying about a fake car-jacking.


Rosa Allien Timpson, 23; De’Metria Michelle Osborne, 20; and Laquandra Sashun Fenn, 34, all of Sumter Landing Lane, and Markisha Shaundralyn Jackson, 21, of Old Evans Road, were charged with making false statements. Timpson also was charged with making a false report of a crime and Fenn also was charged with a seatbelt violation and driving on a suspended license.

Martinez woman killed in I-20 crash   03/04/13 - 10:09am

A Martinez woman was killed early Saturday in a crash on Interstate 20 near Grovetown.

Alaina Kensinger, 28, was pronounced dead at Georgia Regents University Medical Center at 9:11 a.m., said Columbia County Deputy Coroner Harriett Garrison.

Kensinger was a passenger in a 2008 Nissan Sentra driven by Christopher Sanmiguel, 27, of Evans, said Columbia County Sheriff's Office Capt. Steve Morris.
