Grovetown city council approves Sunday alcohol sales   12/13/11 - 10:53am

The Grovetown City Council voted Monday to legalize Sunday packaged alcohol sales.

The city council last month approved an amendment to repeal the city ordinance banning packaged sales on Sundays. The amendment also states that licensed establishments can sell alcohol 12:30-11:30 p.m. Sundays.

Licensed stores can start selling packaged alcohol on Sundays as soon as this Sunday, Dec. 18.

Sandalwood Drive reopens as stormwater project continues   12/12/11 - 1:46pm

A Springlakes subdivision thoroughfare that has been closed for months to accommodate a slow-moving culvert project was re-opened today.

Although Sandalwood Drive is now open, the surrounding area remains a work zone with heavy equipment operating along the adjacent right-of-way, according to Columbia County Water Utility.

Stevens Creek Elementary named School of Excellence   12/12/11 - 12:28pm

Columbia County school officials announced this morning that Stevens Creek Elementary School has been named a Georgia School of Excellence.

The Martinez school is one of just 26 in the state to receive the School of Excellence title this year.

To qualify, schools must place in the top 10 percent of highest performing schools on assessments in reading or math, or have attained the greatest continuous gains in student achievement for the past three years, according to a school system press release.

Radiothon raises nearly $157,000 for Children's Medical Center   12/12/11 - 12:37pm

The 11th annual Cares for Kids Radiothon, which ended Saturday, with host radio station WBBQ-FM (104.3) and 96.3 KISS FM, raised $156,867 in pledges and donations for the Medical College of Georgia Children’s Medical Center.

The radiothon is one of the hospital’s largest fundraisers. Proceeds help the Children’s Medical Center provide specialized care for children and families across the Southeast.

The 2010 total was $216,779.

A feasibility study completed by the U.S. Postal Service supports discontinuing mail-processing operations at Augusta’s main branch, the postal service has announced.

According to the postal service, local mail - including all mail from Columbia County's five post offices - would be sent to Macon, Ga., or Columbia to be sorted and posted to their destinations.

The consolidation would not close Aug­usta’s main post office branch, but it would affect 110 jobs and make the standard delivery time two to three days.

Lawyer hired for Magnolia Trace issue   12/14/11 - 3:38pm

Columbia County officials have hired an attorney for help in finding a way to legally halt construction of a “low-income” development in Martinez.

Patrick O’Connor, with the Oliver Maner firm in Savannah, Ga., was hired Friday afternoon examine the planned construction of Magnolia Trace on Old Ferry Road, County Administrator Scott Johnson said in an email.

Martinez mother, daughter accused of murder granted bond   12/07/11 - 1:13pm

A judge granted a bond for a Martinez mother and daughter charged with murder in the August death of an 85-year-old woman in their care.

Superior Court Judge J. Carlisle Overstreet granted Wednesday a $50,000 bond to Deborah Yvonne Hill, 48, and a $25,000 bond for her daughter, Brittany Michelle Hurst, 19.

Both pled not guilty to charges of murder and cruelty to persons 65 years and older at an arraignment hearing on Friday.

New regions set in GHSA   12/07/11 - 10:31am

All area schools know their region and subregion destinations, except one.

On Tuesday, the Georgia High School Association Reclassification Committee placed schools in regions for the 2012-13 and 2013-14 school years. According to the GHSA Web site, the goals were to cut down on travel costs and time away from class.

Amongst the Augusta-area schools, only Hephzibah must wait a little longer to know everything.

Christmas came a couple of weeks early for a group of children who must battle burn injuries every day.

About 40 young patients of the Joseph M. Still Burn Center at Doctors Hospital arrived Tuesday evening in style to Target in Mullins Crossing. After three stretch SUV limos dropped them off in front of the Evans store, they were greeted by Santa Claus and camera flashes from family and friends.
