Authorities still searching for man missing from lake

Posted: May 26, 2015 - 9:53am

Clarks Hill Lake authorities continue the search Tuesday for a man who went missing from a lake recreation area more than a week ago.

Christopher Lee Harper, 43, was riding his Yamaha WaveRunner just before 3 p.m. May 18 off the beach at West Dam recreation area next to the dam when some beach-goers saw him get flung off, according to Georgia Department of Natural Resources Law Enforcement Division Capt. Mark Padgett said.

Searchers from DNR, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Columbia County Dive Rescue and Recovery team looked for Harper all week using sonar, divers and a helicopter. They’ve found no sign of Harper, Padgett said Tuesday morning. They continue to search in the area of West Dam near the dam as minimal or non-existent currents likely didn’t take Harper away from the area he was last seen.

The Corps of Engineers, which operates the park, did not close the popular beach area over the Memorial Day weekend because of high demand for lake recreation, but Padgett said search efforts continued over the holiday weekend.

Three women on the beach saw Harper get thrown from his jet ski. They said he surfaced once and went back under the water. They tried to reach him. Harper wasn’t wearing a life jacket.
