What was initially thought to be a drive-by shooting at a Martinez car dealership turned out to be something much less serious.

Someone at Jim Hudson Lexus called authorities at about 2:30 p.m. Wednesday stating someone shot a window of the dealership at 3520 Washington Road.

Salesman Tommy Kaszas said he was standing on the front walk in front of the dealership building talking on his cellphone at the time of the incident.

“The next thing I know I heard this noise,” he said. “And the glass shattered.”

The shot shattered a roughly 5-foot-by-10-foot section pane of glass on the east side of the building front.

Employees found what appeared to be a steel ball, similar to a ball bearing, on the sidewalk in front of the window, according to Columbia County sheriff’s Lt. Andy Shedd.

“It appears that it was launched, but was not a gunshot,” Shedd said. “Maybe from some type of slingshot.”

No one heard a gunshot or saw anyone suspicious on or near the lot, Shedd said.

“It does not appear to be any kind of bullet,” Shedd said. The incident is under investigation.
