A Martinez man was quickly arrested Thursday after he robbed a Martinez retail store, police say.

Joshua Allen Adams, 19, of the 100 block of South Belair Road, was charged with armed robbery and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

A clerk of the Dollar General at 210 S. Belair Road said Adams came into the store at about 4:30 p.m. with a revolver in his hand and demanded money, according to a Columbia County Sheriff’s Office incident report. The clerk gave Adams $324 in cash, which Adams put in a pillow case and left.

A deputy responding to store saw Adams outside and ordered him to stop. Adams tried to run away, but was apprehended after a brief foot chase, according to the report.

The deputy found the revolver in his front pants pocket and the pillow case of money in the front pocket of his hooded sweatshirt, according to the report.

While a deputy was handcuffing Adams, he said he didn’t want to hurt anyone, he just wanted to feed his family, according to the report.

The money was returned to the store.

Adams is being held in the Columbia County Detention Center without bond, according to jail records.
