Columbia County authorities are trying to identify a man wanted for stealing another man’s wallet from a Harlem store on June 2.
A Harlem man said he went into Pumpkin Center Store at 1313 Appling-Harlem Road at about 11:10 p.m. on June 2. He showed the clerk his drivers license for cigarettes, then left his wallet on the counter while he got a soda from the cooler, according to a Columbia County Sheriff’s Office incident report.
When the man returned to the register, his wallet was gone. The man said he approached a customer outside about the wallet, but the customer denied taking it, according to the report.
The store owner checked the store video surveillance video and discovered another customer came to the counter to pay for his purchases and put the wallet in his pocket, according to the report.
The thief – a thin white man in his 20s wearing a black T-shirt – took the wallet, then left in a light-colored Chevrolet truck with a chrome took box that was parked at the gas pumps, according to the report.
Anyone with information about the man’s identity or whereabouts should call the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office at (706) 541-2800.
