A North Augusta man was sentenced to life in prison late Wednesday after being convicted of raping an intoxicated Grovetown woman.
A Columbia County jury convicted Timothy Leighton Cook, 26, of rape. Superior Court Judge Carl Brown sentenced Cook to life in prison, the maximum penalty, Assistant District Attorney Falin Syms said.
In May 2012, a Grovetown woman said Cook attended a small family gathering at her home. The group was drinking and the woman got very sick, “she’s never been that sick before or since,” Syms said. The woman’s husband put her to bed.
A short time later, Cook went inside to use the bathroom. He said the woman came into the bathroom, came onto him and they had sex, according to Syms.
“(Cook) said it was a consensual sexual encounter,” Syms said.
The woman told deputies that she was in and out of consciousness, but remembers Cook asking her questions, removing her pants and assaulting her. As soon as the woman was able to get out of bed, she went outside and told her husband she’d been raped.
Cook was previously pled no contest to a October 2010 accusation that he sexually assaulted a woman on the way home from a downtown bar. He also was investigated but never charged after a North Augusta woman claimed Cook groped her.
The jury deliberated about three hours Thursday before convicting Cook.
