Columbia County sheriff's officials confer at the site of a fatal crash Thursday, May 23, 2013, on the 5700 block of Wrightsboro Road west of Grovetown. The woman driving the westbound vehicle was killed when it overturned in the ditch.

A Harlem woman was killed in a single-vehicle crash Thursday afternoon.

Dawn Demaggio, 48, of Freeman Harriss Road, was pronounced dead by Columbia County Deputy Coroner Bonnie King.

Just before 4 p.m., Demaggio was driving west on the 5700 block of Wrightsboro Road just west of Water Branch Baptist Church outside Grovetown when she ran off the right side of the road, said Columbia County Sheriff's Capt. Sharif Chochol.

She apparently over-corrected and crossed over the centerline, with the car spinning sideways and then rolling over multiple times before and landing on its roof facing the opposite direction in the right-side ditch, Chochol said.

It appears Demaggio was not wearing her seatbelt and was dead when emergency responders arrived. The crash remains under investigation.
