An Augusta toddler died in a Thursday afternoon wreck that seriously injured her mother.

Sky Allen, 2, died from injuries she sustained in a single-car wreck on Ray Owens Road in front of North Columbia Elementary School, according to Columbia County Coroner Vernon Collins. An autopsy is expected to be performed Friday at the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Crime Lab in Atlanta, Collins said.

Her mother, Marina Middlebrooks, 27, of Norton Boulevard, Augusta, was airlifted to Georgia Regents Medical Center, where she was stable, Columbia County sheriff’s Capt. Steve Morris said.

At about 4:20 p.m. Thursday, the Honda CRV Middlebrooks was driving north on Ray Owens Road drifted across oncoming traffic and off the road, Morris said. The sport utility vehicle hit a tree, Morris said. No other vehicles were involved.

The toddler was not restrained in the front seat at the time of the wreck, Collins said.

The wreck is still under investigation, Morris said.
