A real “Betsy” no longer participates, but she’ll still lend her name to Martinez-Evans Little League’s annual festival.
The 21st annual Betsy Bingo fundraiser will be held 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 4, at Kelly Park on Old Petersburg Road in Martinez. If it’s rained out, the festival will be moved to the following day from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Admission to the day-long festival is free, with tickets available for purchase for rides, games and food. Also included are wee-ball and T-ball games, and a homerun derby.
The event takes its name from a fund-raising raffle in which participants purchased squares on a grid laid out on an open field. A cow – Betsy – was turned loose to graze, and the winning square was the one on which Betsy first pooped.
A more-traditional raffle now takes place, along with a silent auction. The event is MELL’s main community-wide fundraiser for the organization.
