Columbia County authorities are trying to identify a man they say jumped the counter of a Martinez drug store and stole cigarettes.
A CVS cashier said just after 5 p.m. on Jan. 29, a man jumped over the counter at the store at 4476 Columbia Road. The cashier told the man he wasn’t allowed behind the counter, according to a Columbia County Sheriff’s Office incident report.
The man grabbed three cartons of Newport cigarettes and walked out the front door. He left in a green Dodge Neon headed south on Belair Road.
Anyone with information about the man’s identity or whereabouts should call the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office at (706) 541-2800.

What is it about Newports?
Was in the Circle K at Baston and Old Petersburg a while back and a male and female were trying to buy 5 cartons of Newports each. They did not get the cigarettes but I just wonder what's with the Newports.
Sweet son...5 cartons??? I
Sweet son...5 cartons??? I don't smoke, so I don't know exactly about their prices, but isn't 5 cartons ALOT of money?? Isn't 1 carton of cigarettes over $20??
And one more thing...and this isn't meant to be funny, because it certainly isn't....but I had to chuckle when I read that the cashier told the man that he wasn't allowed behind the counter. You know good and well that this thief KNEW that he wasn't allowed behind that counter!!
Well, I guess I do have just one MORE thing to comment on....about this picture. Guys, is this REALLY the best picture you have of this dude?? It's horrible! I'd be shocked if anyone can identify this guy based on this picture. Let's hope the cashier, or somebody, got the tag number!
@Just My Opinion
They were actually trying to buy them with stolen credit cards. It was obvious that something was not right and the cashier realized it! Thus, no smokes!
