An air ambulance lands on Furys Ferry Road on McCormick County on Monday after Columbia County deputy Mark Benson was hit by a pickup.

An off-duty Columbia County Sheriff’s Office bicycle deputy was hit by a truck as he rode his bike along Furys Ferry Road in McCormick County Monday afternoon.

Deputy Mark Benson, 60, was in fair condition Tuesday morning at the Medical College of Georgia Hospital, according to a hospital spokesperson.

Benson is a 16-year veteran of the sheriff’s office currently assigned to the Special Operations Division Bike Patrol, according to sheriff’s Capt. Steve Morris.

He was riding his personal bicycle along Furys Ferry Road in McCormick County at about 3:15 p.m. when he was hit from behind by a Ford F-150 truck.

Details of the wreck and possible charges weren’t available Tuesday morning from the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

A motorist traveling behind the truck said several other vehicles had passed Benson, but the female driver of the truck hit him. Benson was airlifted to MCG for treatment.
