Just two weeks after holding the national NCAA Division II soccer championships, Columbia County’s Blanchard Woods Park has landed another national event.
The Amateur Athletic Union has selected Blanchard Woods Park as the site of the 2013 AAU National Cross Country Championships, the Columbia County Convention and Visitors Bureau announced.
The event will be held Saturday, Dec. 7, 2013 at the park on Blanchard Road, said CVB Assistant Director Shelly Blackburn.
The competition is expected to bring more than 1,200 athletes to the park, with a projected economic impact of more than $350,000.
Randy DuTeau, the executive director of the CVB, said the organization is “thrilled” to have been selected to hold the event.
“Blanchard Woods is an outstanding venue,” he said.
“We look forward to showing off the course on a national stage.”
The event will be hosted locally through a partnership with the Columbia County CVB and the Columbia County Department of Community and Leisure Services.
In addition to the AAU meet, the NCAA DII National Soccer Championships will return to the Evans park in 2013.
While the cross country course previously has been the site of the Peach Belt Conference Cross Country Championships, the AAU meet marks the first national championship to be held at the park.
