An Evans man is in jail, charged in a Monday night wreck that killed his passenger.
Alfonzo Nelle-Lopez, 28, of Hereford Farm Road, is charged with first degree vehicular homicide, driving under the influence, open container, failure to maintain lane and driving without a license.
His passenger, Alejandro Reyes-Romero, 35, also of Hereford Farm Road in Evans, was ejected from the automobile and died in the wreck.
At about 7:15 p.m. Monday, Nelle-Lopez was driving a Ford Expedition east on Columbia Road between Wortham Lane and High Meadows Drive. He lost control of the vehicle and went off the road. As Nelle-Lopez tried to regain control the SUV skidded across oncoming lanes and onto the opposite shoulder, according to a Columbia County Sheriff’s Office accident report.
The wheels dug into the ground and caused the SUV to roll at least once. Reyes-Romero was thrown from the vehicle.
“He was ejected from the vehicle,” Columbia County Deputy Coroner Harriett Garrison said. “He was not wearing his seatbelt.”
Garrison pronounced Reyes-Romero dead at the scene from a closed head wound and multiple blunt force traumas to his body.
Nelle-Lopez sustained minor injuries.
He’s being held in the Columbia County Detention Center on a $14,500 bond, according to jail records.
