An Augusta man was arrested Wednesday after he fled from a traffic stop and led Columbia County deputies on an extended high-speed chase.
John Kelly Diaz, 22, of Forest Ridge Place, was pulled over at a BP gas station on the corner of Washington Road and Evans Towne Center Boulevard at about 2:25 p.m. for driving with an expired tag and no insurance. The deputy got off his motorcycle and Diaz drove away in a Lincoln Mark VIII, according to a sheriff's office incident report.
Diaz fled authorities and the deputy pursued him along Washington, Columbia and Flowing Wells roads at speeds higher than 20 mph over the posted speed limit, according to the report. The chase went onto Interstate 20, where Diaz sped about 100 mph, and briefly into Richmond County.
Diaz came back into Columbia County, got off the interstate and pulled into Orchard Hill subdivision off Columbia Road.
The car ran out of gas and he tried to run from deputies.
Diaz was arrested and charged with fleeing and attempting to elude police, driving without insurance and without a license, reckless driving, improper use of a center turn lane, failure to obey a traffic control device, driving too fast for conditions and passing in a no passing zone.
He's being held in the Columbia County Detention Center without bond, according to jail records.
