Columbia County school officials intend to announce dates for three upcoming rezoning hearings at Tuesday’s school board meeting.
The rezonings are required as two new schools, Columbia Middle School on William Few Parkway and Evans Elementary School on Gibbs Road, will open at the start of the 2013 school year.
The school board meets at 5:30 p.m. in the Board of Education auditorium at 4781 Hereford Farm Road in Evans.
Pupils currently at Bel Air, Evans and Martinez elementary schools will be affected when the county’s only two-story elementary school opens.
Superintendent Charles Nagle previously said that half the students at Bel Air will shift to the new Evans Elementary.
Pupils at Martinez will move to Bel Air as demolition of their old school is expected to begin in the summer of 2013. The new Martinez school is scheduled to be completed in 2014.
Hearings on the school rezonings are planned for 6:30 p.m. Sept. 12 at Evans Elementary’s current location on Gibbs Road and 6:30 p.m. Sept. 27 at Bel Air Elementary on North Belair Road, according to a Columbia County Board of Education meeting agenda.
Pupil populations at Columbia, Evans and Grovetown middle schools will be redistributed when the new Columbia Middle opens. The two-story school is designed to resemble Stallings Island Middle School.
A rezoning hearing is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Oct. 18 at Columbia Middle’s current location on Columbia Road.
