A Grovetown man was killed Monday after a tree limb fell in his backyard and struck him on the head.

Steven Cotton, 42, of the 100 block of Lottie Lane, was outside unlocking a shed in his backyard when the dead limb broke off from a tree and fell about 80 feet, said Columbia County Coroner Vernon Collins.

Part of the limb, about 6 inches in diameter, fell onto the shed and broke, Collins said.

“The rest of it hit him in the top of the head, killing him instantly,” he said.

Collins said he pronounced Cotton dead at about 5:15 p.m.

“He probably just heard a sound and that was it,” Collins said.

As a precaution, Cotton’s body was transported to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Crime Lab in Augusta for an autopsy, Collins said.
