An Evans man was arrested late Wednesday after his wife said he beat her with an ax handle.

Charles Carol Eatman, 79, of the 4600 block of La Pointe, was charged with aggravated assault.

Just before midnight Wednesday, Eatman’s 52-year-old son called authorities claiming Eatman and his mother were physically fighting. Eatman said he was sleeping and had no idea what deputies were talking about.

Eatman’s 77-year-old wife told deputies that they argued and her husband hit her with a wooden ax handle several times.

Deputies asked to see the injuries and found bruises covering the woman’s arms. Her legs and knees also were swollen and covered in bruises. She had bruises on her upper back and neck, swollen hand and fingers and bleeding wounds on her hand and knee.

Eatman’s wife said he’d beaten her with the ax handle since Sunday afternoon.

She was taken to Doctors Hospital, where medical personnel told deputies they found bruises on about 80 percent of her body.

Eatman is being held in the Columbia County Detention Center without bond, according to jail records.

At least he didn't hit her

At least he didn't hit her with a shovel.

Only Aggravated Assault ??!!

What about attempted murder ? Being hit, over 80 % of your body, over several days, equates in my book to attempted murder. Of course, why would she stay there, after the first attack ? Leave him in a cell, and let him die there. Don't let him bond out. Have a quick trial and a quick sentence, and be done with it. OR, let the son have some quality "playtime" with dad, for hitting his mom with an axe handle. Stupid old man.

Georgia law

Rip: Georgia law does not have a charge called "attempted murder." Aggravated assault is the highest charge before homicide. For aggravated assault against a spouse, or someone older than 65, the law requires minimum of three years in prison, maximum of 20.

I stand corrected, then...

I stand corrected, then... Sentence him to twenty -- he'll be dead by then. While it is still no excuse, there was not any mention of whether there had been any drinking going on. Some anger issues with the old coot too -- who would even begin to think about hitting their wife with an axe handle. Wrong on so many different levels...
