Cycling race to alter traffic patterns

The 2012 USA Cycling National Championships are being held in the area Wednesday through Sunday and will affect traffic throughout Columbia County.

Races will be held at Fort Gordon on Wednesday with race traffic entering through Gate 1. The heaviest traffic is expected to be from 6-10 a.m.

Thursday, the USA Cycling Time Trial Championships will be held at the J. Strom Thurmond Dam. Clarks Hill Road will be closed from Furys Ferry Road to Washington Road from 6 a.m. until 6 p.m.

Those trying to use Clarks Hill Road from Pollard’s Corner into McCormick, S.C., will be detoured along Ray Owens Road to Lincolnton and McCormick.

The intersection at Pollard’s Corner will be closed from 7:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. Motorists will be detoured via Clarks Hill Road to Ray Owens, Washington and Yelton roads. Clarks Hill Road will re-open tentatively at 6 p.m.

Also on Thursday, Cobbham Road from Washington Road to Ray Owens Road will be closed from 8 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. with traffic detoured along Ray Owens Road.

Clarks Hill Park, West Dam and Lake Springs will be closed. Petersburg Campground will be open, but with limited entry and exiting.
