Area authorities recently arrested two men they say broke into vending machines outside self-serve businesses in Columbia and Richmond counties.
Freddie Gordon, 50, of Golden Rod Street in Augusta, was arrested Tuesday evening. He's charged with larceny and second degree criminal damage to property and is being held on a $4,200 bond, according to Columbia County Detention Center records.
Henry Scott Marchman, 46, of Hephzibah-McBean Road in Hephzibah, was arrested Wednesday on the same charges. He's being held on a $3,700 bond, according to jail records.
The owner of the Dollar Wash at 3515 Old Petersburg Road in Martinez said that just before midnight on May 28 someone broke into a vending machine outside the car wash.
Video surveillance footage showed two men, later identified as Gordon and Marchman, arrive in a red and white Ford truck Marchman was driving.
Authorities say Marchman tampered with a vending machine until it opened. He threw several items into the truck and drove away, according to a Columbia County Sheriff’s Office incident report.
The pair are suspected of a similar theft on May 29 at the Washing Well Coin Laundry at 4286 Windsor Spring Road in Augusta.
