As Gordon College continues its run through the Junior College World Series, Harlem grad Josh Wirsu is playing a large part in the team’s success.
Wednesday night, the freshman right-hander pitched six strong innings against San Jacinto College and was the winning pitcher as the Highlanders posted a 9-7 win.
Wirsu felt confident heading to the mound, but he had to work through a case of the nerves once he got there.
“In the second inning, the mound got about 30 feet closer than it was in the first inning,” said Wirsu. “I felt like I was pitching from the outfield,” he said of that first inning.
The Highlanders have won three-consecutive games and are slated to play Iowa Western Community College Thursday night at 9:30 p.m. EST.
Wirsu said the team came in with confidence after besting a tough Middle Georgia College squad in the district championships, and that is the way the team has continued through the World Series.
“We’ve just been putting on a ton of runs, we’ve been playing loose and I guess that’s our key to success is that we’re playing loose and playing hard,” he said.
