The Augusta area’s first Steak ‘n Shake should be open by fall.
Construction of the Columbia County restaurant is expected to begin by June, said franchise owner Preston Moss.
“We should start construction in two weeks and be operational by the first or middle of September,” said Moss, who works for Blanchard and Calhoun Insurance.
Moss chose to build the restaurant at the corner of Jimmie Dyess Parkway and Belair Frontage Road due to the close proximity of Interstate 20 and high traffic count.
“It’s a great location,” he said. “It’s going to be fun.”
A Ruby Tuesday had once been planned on the site.
The widely popular burger joint specializes in steakburgers and hand-dipped milkshakes. The menu also includes chili, burger melts, sandwiches, salads and desserts.
The 3,500-square foot restaurant will remain open 24 hours, seven days a week and serve breakfast. It will also have a drive-through window and employ about 100 people, Moss said.
The management team has already been hired and is in training, he added.
Moss initially hoped to open the restaurant in July but was briefly held up by the Steak ‘n Shake corporate office.
He said he continues to receive positive feedback from those in the community.
“You would not believe the comments, the phone calls, the emails I get,” he said.
There are nearly 500 Steak ‘n Shake restaurants in 22 states across the country. The closest locations to the Augusta area are Atlanta, Macon and Statesboro.
